Lake Kivu is one of Africa's great lakes, and lies in the Albertine Rift Valley sharing the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kivu Lake covers a total surface area of some 2,700 km2 and stands 1,460 meters above sea level. Some 1,370 km2 or 58 percent of the lake's waters lie within DRC borders. The lake is surrounded by hundreds of hills and mountains. Its maximum depth is 480 m, which ranks it eighteenth in the world.
